Ledisi: A Voice of Soul, Strength, and Timeless Inspiration

When Ledisi steps onto the stage at the 15th Anniversary John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival on Saturday, September 5, audiences can expect more than a performance—they will experience a masterclass in soul, storytelling, and vocal brilliance.

The Grammy Award–winning vocalist has long been celebrated as one of the most captivating voices of her generation. Possessing a remarkable four-octave mezzo-soprano range, Ledisi commands the stage with a blend of elegance, emotional depth, and musical versatility that few artists can match. Whether delivering a tender ballad or an electrifying anthem, her voice resonates with power and authenticity.

Her journey to the spotlight began in intimate club settings, where audiences first witnessed the magnetic presence that would eventually carry her to some of the world’s most prestigious stages. Among those milestones was a sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall—an achievement that confirmed what fans had known all along: Ledisi is a rare talent whose artistry transcends genre and generation.

The Music in Her

Across a career defined by passion and persistence, Ledisi has received 15 Grammy nominations and captured a win for Best Traditional R&B Performance for the heartfelt single “Anything for You.” Songs such as “I Need to Know,” “Pieces of Me,” and “Alright” have become modern soul classics, earning her a devoted following and a firm place in contemporary R&B and jazz.

Born in New Orleans and raised in Oakland, California, Ledisi’s musical foundation reflects a rich cultural tapestry. Surrounded by diverse sounds—from jazz and gospel to funk and R&B—she developed the versatility that allows her to move effortlessly between genres while maintaining her distinctive voice.

Among her greatest influences is the legendary Nina Simone. In 2021, Ledisi honored that influence with Ledisi Sings Nina, a deeply personal project recorded with the Metropole Orkest and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. The album earned her yet another Grammy nomination and reaffirmed her ability to interpret classic repertoire with reverence and fresh emotional insight.

Continuing that tradition of tribute, Ledisi’s current release, For Dinah, celebrates the incomparable Dinah Washington. Through iconic songs such as “This Bitter Earth” and “What a Difference a Day Makes,” Ledisi channels the spirit of Washington while bringing her own warmth and perspective to the material. She has often said that Washington’s music encouraged her to create boldly and lead confidently—qualities that continue to define her career.

Beyond the Microphone

Ledisi’s artistry extends far beyond the recording studio and concert stage. As an actress, author, and advocate, she has built a career that reflects both creative excellence and social commitment.

Her film work includes roles in Leatherheads and Spinning Gold, as well as widely praised portrayals of gospel icon Mahalia Jackson in Remember Me and the acclaimed historical drama Selma. These performances showcased yet another dimension of her talent, proving that her storytelling abilities are as compelling on screen as they are through song.

Equally important is her advocacy. Ledisi has appeared on Capitol Hill to support the rights of writers and performers, using her voice to champion those whose creativity fuels the music industry. In 2023 she was inducted into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., where she previously served as president of the Los Angeles chapter, and she currently serves as a Trustee of the Recording Academy.

Her influence was further recognized in 2024 when Berklee College of Music awarded her an honorary doctorate—an acknowledgment of both her artistic achievements and her enduring impact on the global music community.

A Voice That Endures

For audiences gathering in Oak Hollow Festival Park this September, Ledisi’s appearance promises to be a highlight of the festival. With a voice that carries the echoes of jazz, soul, and gospel tradition—and a spirit rooted in resilience and joy—she embodies the very musical legacy that the John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival celebrates.

Simply put, when Ledisi sings, she doesn’t just perform. She connects, uplifts, and reminds listeners why great music continues to move us across generations.
