Richard Elliot, a Grammy® nominated saxophonist, who has been a defining force in contemporary jazz for over four decades will perform at the John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025 with guitarist Peter White and trumpeter Rick Braun.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, and raised in Los Angeles, CA, Elliot’s musical journey began with a deep appreciation for Motown legends like Smokey Robinson and The Temptations, influences that continue to resonate in his soulful sound.
TOWERING HORN
Elliot’s career took off in the 1980s as a member of the iconic funk band Tower of Power, where his dynamic tenor saxophone performances earned him widespread acclaim. He also collaborated with renowned groups like the Yellowjackets and artists such as Natalie Cole and the Pointer Sisters, highlighting his versatility across genres.
As a solo artist, Elliot has released over 20 albums, blending jazz, R&B, blues, and pop into a signature style that captivates audiences worldwide. His breakout hit, a rendition of “When a Man Loves a Woman,” solidified his place in the smooth jazz genre. Other fan favorites include “Chill Factor,” “Crush,” and “Corner Pocket.”
COLLABORATIVE FORCE
Beyond his solo work, Elliot has been a collaborative force in the jazz community. He co-founded the ARTizen Music Group (now Artistry Music) with trumpeter Rick Braun, fostering a platform for innovative jazz projects. His participation in the “Grooving for Grover” concert series, alongside saxophonists Gerald Albright and Paul Taylor, paid tribute to the late Grover Washington Jr., further cementing his legacy.
Elliot’s artistry extends beyond music; he is a licensed pilot and a craftsman, currently building his own two-seat plane. His latest album, STRAIGHT UP DOWN, released in 2024, exemplifies his commitment to authenticity and innovation, featuring original compositions that blend nostalgia with contemporary grooves.
