Some concerts change the way you hear music. Some conversations change the way you think about it. The 3rd Annual Coltrane JazzFest Masterclass Series promises to do both.
On Friday, September 4, 2026 at 7pm, Victor Wooten and the Wooten Brothers take the stage at High Point Theatre for an evening that’s part performance, part conversation, part philosophy seminar — and entirely unlike anything else happening in the Piedmont Triad this year.
A Family Like No Other
From child prodigies to Grammy-winning innovators, the Wooten Brothers are one of the most extraordinary family ensembles in modern music. Their journey began in 1966 in Hawaii, where they quickly established themselves as musical marvels — opening for legendary acts like War and Curtis Mayfield while youngest brother Victor was still a child.
Today the Wooten name is synonymous with virtuosity and genre-defying artistry. Together they’ve amassed 10 Grammy Awards and 26 Grammy nominations across jazz, funk, R&B, classical, rock, and beyond. Victor has been named by Rolling Stone among the ten greatest bass players of all time.
Each brother brings singular brilliance to the family’s sound. Regi — “The Teacha” — is revered as a master guitarist and mentor. Roy “Future Man” Wooten is a visionary inventor whose Drumitar reimagined rhythm itself. The late Rudy Wooten left an indelible mark with saxophone artistry inspired by giants from Clifford Brown to John Coltrane. And Joseph — “The Hands of Soul” — has dazzled global audiences through his work with the Steve Miller Band.
What Makes This Different
This is our third Masterclass and each year the community shows up and leaves changed. In 2024 the Lao Tizer Band packed UNCG’s recital hall for an intimate conversation about jazz and creativity. In 2025 Michael League brought Snarky Puppy to High Point Theatre and the community showed up in force.
These evenings work because the artists come not just to perform but to share — to pull back the curtain on how they think, create, and listen. Expect live musical demonstrations, candid conversation about groove and improvisation, and the kind of Q&A that leaves you hearing music differently for the rest of your life.
And on Saturday, those same artists take the main stage at Oak Hollow. The Masterclass doesn’t just teach you about music — it transforms the way you experience the performance that follows.
