Every year, the NC Coltrane All-Star Band brings together a fresh group of top-tier musicians — and for 2026, you spoke and we listened. Fans asked for Garry Percell, so this year’s lineup is his to lead! The Billboard-charting guitarist and Upward Bound Music Group founder — known for hits like “Don’t Stop” and “Smooth Strut” and his new single “Love Ballad” — takes the stage at the John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival on Sunday, September 6, 2026 in High Point, NC.
BAND MAGIC
Percell has five exceptional musicians by his side to complete the band: Saxophonist Collin Williams brings melodic clarity sharpened at NCCU’s jazz program, bassist Dennis Dudley is a world-traveled producer and music director who has performed in over 75 countries alongside artists like Ne-Yo and Kenny Latimore, keyboardist Eric Callands pairs Collegiate Jazz Pianist honors with a band director’s precision, keyboardist Jay Reese channels a “cool but funky” sound inspired by Herbie Hancock, and drummer Nick Hayes holds down the groove after a decade with guitar legend Eric Gales — together, the kind of set that’ll send you home with a tune in your soul.
LIFELONG PASSION
Born in Reidsville, North Carolina, Percell brings together contemporary jazz, R&B, funk, and gospel influences to create a signature sound that is both technically masterful and deeply expressive.
Music has been a lifelong calling for Percell, who grew up surrounded by the sounds of faith and family. Inspired by his mother, a church pianist, he began playing guitar at age nine. His musical foundation expanded through influences that included Ernie Isley, Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix, and Motown, shaping a style that moves effortlessly between the intimacy of acoustic ballads and the energy of electric funk.
As founder of Upward Bound Music Group and Upward Bound Recording Studio, Percell continues to create music that reflects his artistic vision. Beyond music, Percell’s work as a minister and pastor informs his belief that music can move people beyond words—using melody, rhythm, and emotion to create a lasting connection.
