Ravi Coltrane

Performing Live

Sunday, Sep 6, 2026

Ravi Coltrane will take the stage on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026, at the John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival as part of the celebration honoring the 100th anniversary of his father’s birth. The appearance promises to be more than a tribute concert. It will be a living continuation of the adventurous spirit that made the Coltrane name legendary around the world.

LEGACY PERSONIFIED

As the son of jazz visionary John Coltrane and spiritual jazz pioneer Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane carries one of the most recognizable legacies in music history. But over the past two decades, the Grammy-nominated saxophonist, composer, and bandleader has built a legacy entirely his own—one rooted in fearless creativity, collaboration, and a deep respect for jazz tradition without being confined by it.

Born in Long Island, NY and named after legendary sitar master Ravi Shankar, Ravi grew up surrounded by artistic innovation. After the death of John Coltrane in 1967, the family relocated to Los Angeles, where Alice Coltrane became a major creative and spiritual influence in his life. Years later, Ravi would help guide his mother back into recording and performing, producing and performed on her acclaimed 2004 release, Translinear Light.

Since emerging as a major force in contemporary jazz, Ravi has released six albums as a leader, including Spirit Fiction, Blending Times, and Influx. His playing blends emotional depth with modern sophistication, earning admiration from longtime jazz listeners and younger audiences discovering improvisational music through streaming platforms, festivals, and live collaborations.

EVOLVING CONVERSATIONS

Throughout his career, Ravi has shared stages and studios with an extraordinary range of jazz innovators, including Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, Terence Blanchard, Jack DeJohnette, Geri Allen, and Joe Lovano. Jones and Tyner, were part of the “Classic Quartet” between 1961-1965 and recorded some of the most well known albums with John Coltrane including  A Love Supreme, Cresent and Impressions. Ravi also co-led the acclaimed group Saxophone Summit alongside Lovano and Dave Liebman.

What continues to set Ravi apart is his ability to balance legacy with forward momentum. Rather than simply revisiting the past, he approaches jazz as an evolving conversation—one shaped by experimentation, spontaneity, and human connection. His recent performances and collaborative projects reflect an artist committed to pushing the music forward while remaining deeply grounded in its roots.

For audiences attending the 15th annual John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival, Ravi Coltrane’s performance will offer a rare opportunity to witness an artist who embodies both the history and future of jazz. It is a celebration not only of a legendary musical family, but also of the enduring power of creative exploration across generations.
