Chieli Minucci has spent more than four decades shaping the sound of contemporary jazz-fusion as the longtime leader and creative force behind the Grammy-nominated group Special EFX. The composer, producer, and arranger will perform with the Lao Tizer Band on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2026 at the John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival in High Point, NC.

Skilled at blending jazz, rock, Latin world music with sophisticated melodic songwriting helped make Special EFX a defining name in the contemporary jazz landscape. Since forming the group with percussionist George Jinda in the early 1980s, Minucci has built a remarkable catalog of music known for its intricate arrangements, virtuosic musicianship, and global influences.
Special EFX recently revisited its legacy with the release of Return to Budapest With Love, an archived 1990 live concert recording capturing the band during its early European tours. The group also celebrated its 40th anniversary with TWENTY TWENTY 2, a release reflecting Minucci’s continued evolution as a composer and performer. In addition, his intimate solo acoustic project, Someone’s Singing, showcasing a more personal and stripped-down side of his artistry.

Minucci’s talents extend far beyond the concert stage. He is also an accomplished television and film composer, earning three Emmy Awards and receiving 10 Emmy nominations for his work. His compositions have been featured in major film soundtracks, including No Country for Old Men, Legally Blonde and Panic.
